How to Create the Perfect Dining Room Set

The meeting point in your home for both your family members and your guests is the dining room. It’s where you gather to eat and to entertain. It’s important to create an atmosphere in your dining room that is casual, yet intimate. Spector Furniture offers all the dining room furniture you need to build a great meeting place for your family and guests. In order to create the best possible dining room in your home, be sure to keep the following factors in mind.

The first thing you should do to create a beautiful space is to choose the best color for the room. Since the dining room is intended to be a gathering place full of conversation and interaction, warm colors like red, orange, yellow, tan and light green are encouraged. These tones are said to be more engaging for guests. The idea is that these warm colors are intimate and comfortable, the perfect setting for your dining room.

When selecting furniture for your dining room, make sure to consider both the color of the rest of the room and the size of the room. You’ll want furniture that can fill the space, but not too overwhelming. You’ll want plenty of room to move around and to pull chairs out without hitting anything. Measure the space so you know you have plenty of room to move about.

The furniture you select should also match the color of the rest of the room. Warm-colored walls should complement a warm-colored dining room table. Red or tan wood and oak tables and chairs are popular choices. The table should also match the shape of your dining room. In smaller rooms, a round or square table will work best. At the other end of the spectrum, bigger rooms call for a longer, rectangular table to fill the space. One way to compromise would be to purchase a smaller table that includes extension leaves. This way, you can maximize the open space in your dining room throughout the year, but fill the space with adequate table space and seating when guests are over.

Choose chairs that match the color of your dining room table. Wood, oak and leather chairs often work best. Bar stools also work if you have a taller table or a countertop in your dining room that faces the kitchen. The idea is to keep your guests at eye level when they are having a conversation.

Once you have the table and chairs set in place, you can fill out your dining room with a number of accessories. These include benches, cabinets, chests, servers and hutches. Make sure these accessories match the color and style of your table, chairs and walls. You can continue to decorate with matching tablecloths and centerpieces like flowers, candles, sculptures and glassware. You can also find a chandelier to hang over the table that matches the aesthetics of the room.

All the dining room furniture you need can be located at Spector Furniture. Our fully stocked furniture store serves customers in Stratford, Milford, Shelton, Waterbury, Fairfield and Orange, CT. We have everything you need for your living room, bedroom, dining room or office. Ask our staff members to help you find the furniture and accessories that best fit your home.

How to Clean Sofa Pillows without a Professional Cleaner

If you’re like me, it won’t be long before you spill something on your sofa pillows while watching TV. When it inevitably happens, there’s no need to panic. That ugly stain can come right off your pillows without having to call professional cleaners or throwing away your expensive cushions.

Tips for removing dirt, dust, mold and stains from sofa pillows:

1.)    Remove the pillow case if there is one and spray it with a cleaning solution. You may also use a sponge and detergent. This will attack the stain. The case can then be washed in your machine under delicate or gentle settings with cold water temperature. To dry the case, hang it on a clothesline or put it in the dryer on gentle if it is safe for machine-dry use. Make sure the case doesn’t shrink, which will make it impossible to put back on over the pillow.

2.)    If there is no cover to remove, or the pillow itself is stained, begin by using a cleaning spray or sponge with detergent.

3.)    Wash the pillows by placing them in a tub or sink filled with warm water and more detergent.

4.)    Once the pillow is soaked, drain it out then put it in clean water for about 10 minutes.

5.)    After 10 minutes, drain the pillow again then let it dry outside, ideally in the sun.

All that’s really needed to clean a sofa pillow is a spray cleaner, sponge, detergent and a tub or sink. A washing machine or dryer will work if you are just cleaning the pillowcase. Remember to never use bleach on your pillows as the bleach will damage the fabrics. It’s ideal to clean just the pillowcase if possible because the stuffing inside the pillow will clump together if it is washed, making it tough to keep the pillow in its original shape.

If you follow these tips and still can’t get your pillow clean, feel free to visit Spector Furniture in Ansonia, CT to ask us for help or to look at our selection of pillows and other accents for your sofa. Customers from Fairfield, Stratford, Milford, Orange, Waterbury and Shelton flock to our furniture store for our family-owned service and huge selection of living room furniture, bedroom furniture, bedding, dining room sets and office furniture.

Furniture & Fabric Cleaning : Suede Sofas and Shoes

Spotless Suede Made Simple

Suede is used in a variety of ways – for furniture, for shoes, bags, and clothing.  In fact, it was originally used for women’s gloves because of its soft, comfortably texture.  There are a number of methods one might take to eliminate stains from their favorite suede items. While the material is certainly temperamental in a number of senses, there are ways you can address unwanted spots and blotches with simple household items.

First, gather a plastic spoon, some mild detergent (without soap) and some soft white cloths. Separate forms of suede react differently to various commercial cleaners, so test a hidden area of fabric before cleaning any visible portions of cloth.

Also, some cleaning tips may not work for all kinds of materials.  Always try a method on a hidden piece of fabric in order to test if there will be an adverse reaction, like further staining or damaging your piece of furniture.  If you’re really unsure, you should call a professional cleaner.

1. First, try to scrape away bits of the stain with your plastic spoon.
2. Mix up a small amount of mild detergent in a bucket with some water.
3. Mix the water around to produce some suds.
4. Here’s the important part. Use one of the white cloths to apply some of the suds to the affected area. Suds ONLY. Applying too much water to suede may damage the surface.
5. Continue to blot the area and lift the stain away. You should begin to see the stain transferring over to your towel.
6. When the suds have worked their magic, and the stain has been eliminated, blot the suede with a dry cloth.
7. At this point, you may choose to pick up a suede brush and groom your surface back to its original state.

Hopefully, this trick works for you.  If not, or you are curious about how to clean or care for a different piece of furniture, let us know in the comments.  We’ll try to answer any questions you have about the care and maintenance of your furniture pieces.  Why?  Not only do we sell furniture, but Spector Furniture wants it to stand the test of time as well!

Furniture Store DIY Cleaning : Leather Couches

How to Clean a Leather Couch

Waterbury CT Furniture Store Tips

Have you recently purchased a new leather couch from your local furniture store? Sure, it may provide an exceptional addition to your living room or home office, but when it comes to up-scale items like leather furniture, it’s important to remember one thing – proper maintenance. Nobody is disputing the fact that leather is a stunning and luxurious material. It’s simply imperative that you take the proper steps to preserve the material. So, why is it important that leather is regularly taken care of? Well, if you didn’t already know, leather is a durable and versatile material made primarily from cattle hide and other animal skins. Through a process called tanning, the rawhide is converted into what you see when you look at a leather item. Before being made into leather, however, the rawhide was taken care of by nature; it was naturally fed, cleaned and repaired daily. After the tanning and conversion process, these responsibilities are turned over to you, the owner of that new leather couch. Now that your couch has left the furniture store, the maintenance of the leather is your duty. It’s important that you know how to fulfill this requirement in order to preserve the life of your product.

Type of Leather

There are various types of leather, from top grained to aniline, which are coated in different ways; before you begin cleaning your leather, it’s essential that you know what type you are working with. Separate coatings will often require different levels of cleaning. Usually, tags or other written information should tell you which type of leather you’re working with. You can also return to the furniture store you bought your piece from and inquire there.

Cleaning Supplies

It is important to have the correct cleaning supplies for your leather couch. After determining the type of leather upholstery, you will know whether or not you need special cleaning products like saddle soap to do the job. Homemade cleaning solutions like vinegar and water are sometimes required as well. In general, it’s suggested you always keep soft cloths, water, a bucket, a rag and a vacuum on hand throughout the process.

Vacuum

First, prepare a smooth and clean slate before really taking care of the dirty work. Use a vacuum with a soft brush attachment to rid the couch’s surface of any dust, grime or air-borne particles. If these particles come in contact with moisture or cleaning products, damage could be done to the surface of your leather couch.

Cleansing

Inspect your couch for stains. If there are any affected areas, apply a store-bought stain remover. Then, mix the appropriate cleaning solution or product with warm water. With a soft and damp cloth, start the application at the top of the couch and work your way down while rinsing the cloth when necessary. While drying, do not use forced air, as this may dehydrate the furniture; use a soft, clean cloth and wipe in circular motions. After the leather is dry, let it sit unused overnight.

Condition and Buffer

Conditioning your leather is necessary after cleaning the upholstery. Skip this crucial step, and your leather may crack and dry. There are some home-based remedies that are commonly used, but it is best to inquire with the manufacturer or furniture store as to which product to use. Apply the conditioner in circular motions and let it sit for an extended period of time or overnight. Now you can buff your couch with a clean rag and restore its shine. Cleaning a leather couch is simple when you have the right materials and perform the right steps in order – vacuum, clean, condition and buff. Clean it about once a month or after an event or gathering where it was extensively used. By properly maintaining your leather furniture, you can keep it looking as good as new for years to come.

Furniture Cleaning FAQ : Football and Chicken Wing Stains

How do I clean up chicken wing stains on my sofa?

The Super Bowl just passed a few weeks ago and the Olympics, NHL season, and March Madness are on their way. What does this mean? A lot of parties centered around the sofa, watching the television. And, for many people, this must be accompanied by pizza and chicken wings. The problem is, your couch might not be the color of chicken wing sauce – nor do you want it to be. But when the game gets rough, spills and mishaps occur. We want to give you some tips how to clean up those stains so that your furniture lasts longer in the color you intend it to be. To clean up chicken wing sauce, speed is of the essence. The red, spicy liquid can start staining pretty quickly and will affect most fabrics. For the best cleaning, you should have access to:
  • paper towels
  • a clean cloth
  • a clean sponge
  • liquid dish detergent
  • white vinegar
  • a bowl
Instructions:
  1. First, lightly dab the stained area with a paper town to catch the excess wing sauce. Let the paper towel do most of the work as its capillaries will suck up the sauce from the fabric before it becomes permanent.
  2. Second, combine about one tablespoon of dish detergent with two cups of water into a bowl. This will be your cleaning formula. If you think that the stain is worth it, you can also add white vinegar to the mixture for extra cleaning power.
  3. Then, use your sponge or clean cloth and blot the cleaning mixture into the stain.
  4. Next, use a dry cloth or sponge to dry the stained area. Again, you want to blot or pat the stain, not rub or scrub.
  5. Repeat steps 3 and 4 until the stain is fully removed.
  6. Rinse with cold water and dry in a timely fashion. Because your couch cushions might be fluffy and thick, set the cushion on its side or in the sunlight in order to dry it quickly. If wetness stays for too long, you might be problems in the future.
So, there you have it – a quick and easy process to clean a chicken wing stain. This might not work in every case – it will depend on your fabric, how long it takes, and the kind of wing sauce. But, it may just help you out when you’re in a pinch. Do you have a question about how to clean or maintain your furniture? Contact us at Spector Furniture and we’ll try and answer it for you here!
